Beer Review - Brooklyn Brewery Summer Ale

Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery (Brooklyn, NY)

Beer: Summer Ale

Style: English Style Light Dinner Ale

ABV: 5%

It is still triple digits in Texas, so we are still drinking the summer seasonal beers!  We selected Brooklyn Brewery's Summer Ale for our next beer review.

Here is what Brooklyn Brewery has to say about the beer:

Brooklyn Summer Ale is a modern rendition of the "Light Dinner Ales" brewed in England throughout the 1800's right up until the 1940's. They were also called "luncheon ales" or even "family ales", because they were refreshing and flavorful without being too heavy. We brew our Brooklyn Summer Ale from premium English barley malt, which gives this light-bodied golden beer a fresh bready flavor. German and American hops lend a light, crisp bitterness and a citrus/floral aroma resulting in a beer with a very sunny disposition.

Here is what we thought:

Appearance: Hazy, Light golden color, thin white head

Smell: Grain. Czech hops. Vitamins. Bread. A bit musty.

Taste: Buttered bread, malt forward with very subtle hops in the finish

Mouthfeel: Semi-dry with less than average carbonation.

Drinkability: Light to medium in body.  A little more flavor and backbone compared to other summer seasonals.

Verdict: Not a particularly complex beer, but still tasty and refreshing.

Grade: B

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback Alexavier and Jonnie!  Always good to hear what others think about the beers we rate.  Would love to hear your recommendations on future beer/pub reviews.

Hey Mark,Belgians are my favorite steyls of beer. There are very few American Tripels that make the grade, well for that matter there are very few of any Belgian steyls that are any good from American breweries. Thanks for the warning about this one. I do recommend two American Tripels that arent bad; Allagash Tripel Reserve is very good, close to a real Belgian and Stoudts is not bad either. Theyre not Tripel Karmeliet but better then most. Thanks for another great review.
